What is a binary watch and why are binary watches all the rage? If you don¡¯t know, it¡¯s about ¡®time¡¯ you did!
15/03/2010 14:58
Are binary watches here to stay or just a flash in the pan? Only time will tell! Binary watches have certainly become very popular with gadget geeks and computer boffins - but they’re starting to have more mainstream appeal with people who want to tell the time in a new and exciting way, and with those who want to make a fashion statement and keep ahead of the times. There’s no denying they look good with their dazzling LED displays and glitzy state-of-the-art watch faces. But what exactly is a binary watch and how does it differ from the tried and proven analogue watch that’s been around for ages? Simply put, a binary watch uses binary code to display the time - which means a combination of zeros and ones is used to enable you to read the time. You may well ask what’s the point of it all - isn’t it easy just to use the traditional analogue method of telling time? Well, there’s nothing stopping you from remaining loyal to this type of timepiece, with the standard hours and minutes hands. But the fact is a binary watch is a new concept and, as such, there will always be people who like to embrace change -as long as the innovation has something positive to offer and isn’t just a here today, gone tomorrow device with novelty appeal. Well, judging by the number of new binary watch models and designs emerging each month, it would appear the new binary way of telling the time is here for some time yet. How to read the time on a binary watch They say a picture is worth a thousand words so maybe the best way to explain how a binary watch work is with a picture. Our example on the right shows the watch face of the Samai Moon binary watch from leading watch company 01 The One. The visual design of each watch face differs from model to model but the principle is the same. A binary watch normally has two rows - the top row displays the hour and the bottom row displays the minutes. The top row has a series of circular LED dots with the numbers 8, 4. 2 and 1 above or below them and the bottom consists of the numbers 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1 below the LED dots. Then it’s just a case of adding up the number of the LED dots that are illuminated to determine the time of the day in hours and minutes. So in the example shown the top Graphic shown courtesy of pioneering watch designers 01 The One row has the lights lit up below the numbers 8, 2 and 1 - which adds up to 11 o’clock and the bottom line has 16, 4, 2 and 1 illuminated which add up to 23, meaning it’s 23 minutes past the hour - giving a final time of 11.23 am. No that complicated, is it? It can take a little while to get the hang of it but there’s no stopping you once you become more familiar with the concept of binary counting - and, of course, it’s great for your mental agility and brings your mathematics on a treat. And let’s not forget how cool it makes you look to your friends and family when you can tell the time by a method that looks like something from a futuristic age to most of them. If this innovative way of telling the time appeals to you and you would like to become the proud of owner of a binary watch there’s a huge range for you to take a look at here from some of the UK’s top online stores - at the best prices around. So what are you waiting for? There’s no time like the present - or in the case of binary watches - the future!

Coolest Matrix LED Watch
12/03/2010 16:29
How it works? Quite simple. 12 green LEDs are used to display hours and the remaining 60 blue led to display minutes. However these smart people have missed one thing, there is not such time as 5:60. I guess they couldn't make a 71 LED watch, it wouldn't have the same effect, so they made a watch using 72 LEDs, which also show the date.
The dimensions of the watch are 55 x 31 x 12 mm thus these 55 mm will stand out on a thin wrist. The timepiece has a stainless steel band and there is also a button for displaying the time and date. There is also the option to display the time every 15 minutes, if you are in a hurry and appeal to your watch every 15 minutes to cheer you up and tell that everything's OK. Use it and have fun with it. One thing is for sure: you will be noticed, right after your wrist has been noticed.
This one is for you, Matrix fans. Actually, it has nothing in common with the cult blockbuster trilogy "Matrix" where Neo saves the real world from the virtual one. The only thing in common is the word 'matrix'. Why is it 'matrix'? Maybe because there are so many LEDs on the face of the watch, I don't know. But one thing I know: almost every friend that I have shown it to has said "Where can I get one of these?"
If I were given 72 colored LEDs I could do a lot of things: I could decorate my room in a groovy glowing cave or place 2 eyes on 36 photos. But this watch proves that there are smart and ingenious people. They've made a 72 LED watch.

Their latest watch is called Kyokusen and it’s available with an IP black body and black leather strap with blue or green lights, or IP silver body and mottled leather strap with multi colored lights.
Using cutting edge digital tube technology the display is noticeably brighter than typical LED watches and is viewable from a much wider angle.
Kyokusen means curved line in Japanese and the name describes the shape of the main display. Each segment of the L shaped curve indicates one hour, and the circular array of lights displays the minutes. When the button is pressed there is a brief animation of lights before the time is displayed.
